The Quaternary Period in the United States. About this book. Reviews advances in understanding of the past ca. two million years of Earth history - the Quaternary Period - in the region now occupied by the . Calcic soils are commonly developed in Quaternary sediments throughout the arid and semiarid parts of the southwestern United States. In alluvial chronosequences, these soils have regional variations in their content of secondary calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) because of (1) the combined effects of the age of the soil, (2) the amount, seasonal distribution, and concentration of Ca ++ in rainfall.

Since the publication of Broecker’s paper in “The Quaternary of the United States,” the use of isotopes in geologic research has increased vastly. Large amounts of radioactive isotopes produced in the atmosphere by nuclear weapons tests resulted in the rapid improvement of detection techniques for studying and monitoring fallout.
